Crucial steps to take after a car accident

On Behalf of | Feb 27, 2023 | Car Accidents, Personal Injury

You’re driving on a Georgia road you’ve traveled hundreds of times when it suddenly happens: a car accident. It’s natural to panic but staying calm and taking steps to protect yourself is your best course of action.

Get to a safe place

If your vehicle isn’t totaled, steer to the side of the road. Your safety is the biggest priority; if your vehicle can’t be driven, get out and stay out of traffic. Check yourself for injuries and do the same for your passengers.

Call 911

Call 911 and make sure the police arrive at the scene of the car accident. Ask for an ambulance so that you and anyone else involved can get checked out by emergency medical personnel. Speak with the police officer who responds and takes an accident report. You can ask them where to get a copy of the report for your own records.

Get and exchange information

Notice if any witnesses appear at the scene. Get their names and contact information and ask for their statements. You can record them with your phone or have them write the details. Exchange information with the other driver involved in the accident. This should include names, phone numbers, addresses, car insurance, license plate numbers and driver’s licenses.

Get medical attention

Go to the emergency room or see your doctor as soon as possible. Sometimes, car accident injuries lie dormant for hours or days because of adrenaline. Seeking medical attention gives you a better chance of recovery and gives you medical records for your evidence.

Staying level-headed and taking immediate action after a car accident can help when you decide to file an injury claim.
